🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer with 5+ years of experience building and scaling SaaS applications, particularly in payments, fintech, billing, or financial integrations. Required skills include Node.js, React, GraphQL, microservices, PostgreSQL, asynchronous processing, relational database optimization, AI platform integration, AI coding tools, testing, CI/CD, and observability. The candidate should be experienced in owning complex features end to end, designing resilient systems, integrating payment or accounting services, collaborating cross-functionally, conducting code reviews, and mentoring engineers.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a payment microservice using Node.js and PostgreSQL?
I would isolate payment responsibilities behind a well-defined service API, use Stripe or another payment provider for sensitive payment operations, and persist transaction state in PostgreSQL. The service would include idempotency, clear state transitions, retries, audit logs, and asynchronous events for downstream workflows.
How would you ensure payment operations are idempotent?
I would require a client-generated idempotency key for operations such as charges, refunds, and subscription changes. The service would store the key, request fingerprint, result, and status in a transactional table, returning the original result when the same request is retried.
How would you process payment-provider webhooks reliably?
I would verify webhook signatures, persist the event before processing, and enforce uniqueness on the provider event ID. Processing would occur asynchronously through a queue with retry and dead-letter handling, while handlers would be idempotent and able to tolerate out-of-order delivery.
How would you model billing and subscription data in PostgreSQL?
I would separate customers, payment methods, products, plans, subscriptions, invoices, payment attempts, refunds, and provider events into normalized tables. I would maintain immutable financial records where possible, use explicit status histories, and add indexes based on access patterns such as customer, subscription, and transaction status.
How would you design a GraphQL API for payment data?
I would expose domain-focused queries and mutations with strict authorization at the resolver and service layers. Sensitive fields would be minimized, pagination and batching would prevent performance issues, and mutations would return explicit transaction states rather than implying synchronous completion.
How would you prevent race conditions when updating payment or subscription state?
I would use database transactions, row-level locking or optimistic concurrency controls, and a well-defined state machine for valid transitions. Events would include version or sequence information so stale or duplicated updates cannot overwrite newer state.
How would you secure a React and Node.js payments application?
I would avoid handling raw card data whenever possible by using provider-hosted fields or tokenization, and I would enforce TLS, strong authentication, authorization, input validation, and secret management. I would also apply least-privilege access, audit sensitive actions, and avoid logging payment credentials or personally identifiable information.
How would you improve the performance of a PostgreSQL-backed payments system?
I would inspect query plans, add targeted indexes, optimize joins and pagination, and use connection pooling with appropriate limits. For high-volume workloads, I would consider partitioning, read replicas for safe read operations, caching non-sensitive data, and asynchronous processing for expensive tasks.
How would you test a payment feature end to end?
I would combine unit tests for business rules, integration tests against PostgreSQL and provider sandboxes, contract tests for GraphQL and webhook payloads, and end-to-end tests covering successful, failed, duplicated, and delayed payments. Tests would also verify retries, authorization boundaries, transactional consistency, and reconciliation behavior.
How would you use observability to operate payment services in production?
I would implement structured logs, distributed traces, and metrics for authorization rates, failure categories, webhook lag, retry counts, processing latency, and reconciliation discrepancies. Alerts should focus on actionable symptoms, while dashboards and correlation IDs should make it possible to trace a payment across the frontend, services, database, queue, and provider.
