Job Description

About Us

Co-founded in 2023 by Joe Laws and Grant Verstandig, Trase Systems is AI, Uncomplicated. Trase empowers enterprise leaders to harness the full potential of AI without the associated complexity and risks. We are an end-to-end solution for deploying, managing, and optimizing AI in the enterprise. Our platform specializes in bridging the “last mile” of AI adoption, unlocking AI's full potential while driving efficiency and significant cost savings. Trase is at the forefront of AI Agent innovation, topping the Hugging Face GAIA Leaderboard for Generalized AI Assistants, ahead of industry giants such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI. We are leveraging our cutting-edge technologies to develop mission-critical agentic applications in complex industries such as Healthcare, Oil & Gas, and National Security.

About the Role

As a Senior or Staff Full Stack Software Engineer at Trase, you will build and support software for Red Cell Federal (RCF), Red Cell Partners (RCP), and RCP incubations and portfolio companies. You will join Trase's dedicated RCF/RCP support team, delivering user interfaces, backend services, APIs, and integrations with a strong focus on federal, government, and national security programs.

Red Cell Partners is an investment and incubation firm that builds and supports technology companies, including Trase. Red Cell Federal is our federal-focused partner within that ecosystem. This role helps RCF and other RCP partner companies adopt Trase OS and build secure AI applications for their missions.

This is a hands-on role with ownership from requirements through production support. You will work directly with partner engineers, Product, the dedicated TPM and DevOps/SRE engineers, Trase Platform Engineering, and GRC to deliver working solutions across the frontend, backend, and integration layers.

The level will reflect your experience and demonstrated scope. Senior engineers will independently own complex features and partner integrations end to end. Staff engineers will also lead architecture across engagements, establish reusable engineering patterns, and mentor engineers.

Why this Role is Needed

RCF and RCP companies need software that works within their applications, security controls, and deployment environments. Success requires intuitive user experiences, reliable APIs and agent workflows, clear audit trails, and dependable integrations.

You will close partner-specific functionality gaps, diagnose issues across application and platform boundaries, and deliver small, validated increments. You will also turn recurring partner needs into reusable improvements with Trase's platform team.

What You'll Do

  • Build full-stack features for RCF/RCP partners, from responsive UI interfaces and administrative tools to backend services, data models, and production integrations.
  • Work directly with partner engineers and Product to clarify use cases, reproduce issues, define acceptance criteria, and deliver small increments. Surface scope, dependencies, and risks with the TPM before committing dates.
  • Integrate partner applications and agents with Trase OS APIs and SDKs, external APIs, MCP tools, and model-provider endpoints. Provide working examples and clear integration documentation.
  • Build reliable agent and workflow integrations, including asynchronous execution, event streaming, state handling, retries, timeouts, and error recovery. Preserve correctness and data integrity across failures.
  • Create usable interfaces for configuring agents, managing connections and policies, reviewing runs, and inspecting logs, traces, costs, and audit history. Make failures and recovery actions understandable to users.
  • Implement authentication, authorization, role-based access, secrets integration, and audit events across frontend and backend services. Partner with Governance, Risk and Compliance on application security findings and engineering evidence for applicable federal requirements.
  • Adapt application configuration and dependencies for customer-managed cloud, private-network, and on-premises environments. Work with DevOps/SRE on packaging, deployment prerequisites, and end-to-end validation.
  • Own quality through code reviews, unit and integration tests, end-to-end tests, representative workflow evaluations, and regression coverage. Verify application behavior in the target environment before partner handoff.
  • Diagnose and resolve partner-reported defects across the UI, APIs, SDK, data stores, and runtime services. Add useful telemetry, support incident investigation, and validate fixes with partners.
  • Support releases, upgrades, and ongoing application maintenance, including federal deployments such as Second Front where applicable. Review and integrate partner contributions, maintain API/SDK compatibility, and coordinate security fixes with platform and DevOps/SRE owners.
  • Document architecture, setup, known limitations, and troubleshooting steps; provide partner walkthroughs and knowledge transfer. Share reusable solutions with the platform team and mentor other engineers.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and supporting production applications; scope and technical leadership appropriate to Senior or Staff level.
  • 5+ years of hands-on full-stack development spanning modern web frontends, backend services, APIs, and databases.
  • Strong frontend skills with TypeScript/JavaScript and React, Next.js, or comparable frameworks, including state management, API integration, and clear, accessible user experiences.
  • Strong backend engineering skills in Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go, Java, or a similar language, including API design, service integration, validation, and error handling.
  • Experience designing data models and working with relational databases, migrations, caching, and asynchronous or event-driven processing.
  • Experience implementing authentication, authorization, secure API access, secrets handling, and audit logging in production applications.
  • Hands-on experience with automated testing, code review, Git, containers, CI/CD, and deploying or troubleshooting applications in cloud or Kubernetes environments.
  • Ability to debug across browser, service, API, and data layers using logs, metrics, and traces, and to own issues through validated resolution.
  • Strong technical judgment, clear written and verbal communication, and experience translating ambiguous customer requirements into maintainable solutions and useful documentation.
  • Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to improve implementation, testing, troubleshooting, or code review, with careful validation of the resulting changes.

Strongly Preferred

  • Prior full-stack software engineering experience supporting national security, defense, federal agencies, or other government programs.
  • An active U.S. government security clearance.
  • Experience with federal application security and delivery requirements, such as STIG hardening, NIST controls, RMF/ATO evidence, FedRAMP, or DoD impact-level environments.
  • Experience integrating identity providers such as Keycloak using OAuth/OIDC, or implementing fine-grained access and sensitive-data controls.
  • Experience building AI/LLM applications, agent integrations, RAG, tool/MCP connections, evaluations, or workflow systems such as Temporal.
  • Customer-facing or forward-deployed engineering experience across multiple partner organizations, including onboarding, technical handoffs, and ongoing support.

๐ŸŽฏ Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Senior or Staff-level full-stack software engineer with 10+ years of experience, U.S. citizenship, and ideally an active security clearance or background in federal, defense, or national security programs.

The candidate should be skilled in TypeScript/JavaScript and React or Next.js, backend development with Python, Node.js, Go, or Java, relational databases, APIs, asynchronous systems, authentication, authorization, testing, containers, CI/CD, cloud or Kubernetes environments, and AI/agent integrations.

They should be familiar with owning end-to-end tasks such as translating partner requirements into production features, building secure interfaces and services, integrating APIs and AI workflows, adapting applications for restricted or on-premises environments, troubleshooting across system layers, supporting releases, and documenting or mentoring others.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a reliable asynchronous agent workflow that supports event streaming, retries, timeouts, and recovery?

I would model workflow state explicitly, persist execution checkpoints, and use idempotent operations so retries do not duplicate side effects. Events would be correlated with execution IDs, while bounded retries, timeouts, dead-letter handling, and observable failure states would support reliable recovery and operator intervention.

How would you integrate a partner application with Trase OS APIs, SDKs, MCP tools, and model-provider endpoints?

I would define a clear integration boundary with typed contracts, authentication, validation, timeouts, and consistent error handling. I would provide a minimal working example, contract and integration tests, documentation for configuration and permissions, and telemetry to diagnose failures across each dependency.

How would you design authentication and fine-grained authorization for a React and backend application using Keycloak or another OIDC provider?

The frontend would authenticate through OIDC and use short-lived tokens, while the backend would validate issuer, audience, signature, expiration, and required claims. Authorization should be enforced server-side using roles, scopes, and resource-level policies, with audit events for sensitive actions and no reliance on client-side checks alone.

How would you model and expose audit history for agent runs, configuration changes, and security-sensitive actions?

I would use an append-oriented audit event model containing the actor, action, resource, timestamp, correlation ID, outcome, and relevant metadata without exposing secrets. Audit records should be tamper-resistant, queryable through authorized APIs, retained according to policy, and correlated with logs, traces, and workflow executions.

How would you build a responsive interface for configuring agents, reviewing runs, and investigating failures?

I would use typed API clients, predictable state management, accessible components, and progressive loading for long-running operations. The UI should show execution status, logs, traces, costs, policy decisions, and actionable recovery options while clearly distinguishing user errors, transient failures, and platform failures.

How would you preserve data integrity when asynchronous workflows are retried or processed more than once?

I would use idempotency keys, unique constraints, transactional updates, and durable state transitions. External side effects would be isolated behind idempotent adapters or an outbox pattern, with reconciliation processes for cases where a database commit and external operation do not complete atomically.

How would you adapt and troubleshoot an application for a restricted-network, customer-managed cloud, or on-premises deployment?

I would externalize configuration and secrets, document network and dependency requirements, package the application reproducibly in containers, and validate it in an environment that matches the target constraints. Troubleshooting would combine deployment manifests, health checks, logs, metrics, traces, and explicit checks for DNS, certificates, identity providers, and unavailable external services.

What testing strategy would you use for a full-stack AI application with external APIs and agent workflows?

I would combine unit tests for business logic, contract tests for APIs and SDKs, integration tests for databases and queues, and end-to-end tests covering representative workflows. External models and tools should be stubbed for deterministic tests, supplemented by controlled evaluations and regression cases for quality, latency, cost, safety, and failure behavior.

How would you diagnose a production issue reported by a partner when the failure could be in the browser, API, data store, or runtime?

I would first reproduce the issue using the partner’s version, configuration, and workflow, then trace a correlation ID across browser telemetry, API logs, services, queues, and database operations. After isolating the cause, I would implement a targeted fix, add regression coverage and useful telemetry, and validate the result in the partner’s target environment.

How would you apply secure engineering practices for federal applications, including NIST controls, STIG hardening, and ATO evidence?

I would minimize privileges, harden base images and runtime configuration, protect secrets, validate inputs, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and maintain dependency and vulnerability management. I would also preserve evidence such as architecture decisions, test results, access reviews, audit records, scan findings, and remediation history so controls can be reviewed and reproduced.
