Xplor Technologies powers the experiences at the heart of everyday life. Through modern vertical software, embedded payments, and AI-powered capabilities, we help businesses in fitness, recreation, golf and club, field services, laundry, education, and other membership-based and service-based industries simplify operations, uncover insights, and elevate customer and member experiences.

Job Description

About the opportunity

Join our Embedded Payments team as a Full Stack Software Engineer and make a real impact every day. We say that because we know that every conversation we have, every line of code we write, and every interface we design is another opportunity for us to elevate everyday life experiences for our customers and the people and communities they serve.

Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, you'll help build and scale our cloud-native payment orchestration platform that processes significant transaction volume across multiple Xplor brands.

You are passionate about building scalable systems and great user experiences while maintaining software development best practices. You write code that is thoughtful end-to-end — from the API contract down to the database, and from the data model up through the UI. You're comfortable owning features across the stack and collaborating closely with backend, frontend, QA, and DevOps engineers to deliver high-quality software.

Our Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React (Vite), MUI, JavaScript
  • Testing: Jest, ESLint, Prettier, Storybook, Playwright, K6
  • Backend: Node.js, AWS (ECS, RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, API Gateway, Lambda, Cognito, SQS, EventBridge)
  • DevOps: Bitbucket Pipelines, Terraform
  • Payments: Worldpay, Stripe, Apple Pay / Google Pay

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Execute the full software development lifecycle across both backend services and frontend interfaces
  • Design and build well-tested, well-documented features that span APIs, data models, and UI
  • Produce technical specifications and assess operational feasibility for new payments features
  • Integrate components into cohesive, production-ready systems with appropriate observability
  • Contribute to verification plans, quality assurance procedures, and deployment guardrails
  • Maintain and improve existing functionality, including documentation
  • Participate in deployment planning, on-call rotations, and incident response as part of running a payments platform
  • Use AI-assisted development tools effectively to improve velocity without compromising quality
  • Stay current with platform updates, security practices, and PCI compliance requirements

Qualifications

What would make you a good candidate?

We are looking for curious and empathetic people. We also love to hear from people who are motivated by meaningful work, resonate with our core values, have a positive outlook, are comfortable with ambiguity and thrive working in an ever-evolving and complex environment. We are inspired by meeting big-picture thinkers and doers, people who can be both tactical and strategic, aim high and put people first in everything they do.

You'll need:

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a Computer Science/Engineering degree or equivalent
  • Strong Node.js experience and demonstrated ability to ship production backend services
  • Experience building React-based frontends that consume RESTful APIs
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and clear understanding of separation of concerns in service design
  • Hands-on experience with AWS or a comparable cloud platform
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines, GitHub Actions, or similar)
  • Proficiency with Git, agile delivery (Scrum preferred), and testing frameworks like Jest
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) and an articulate point of view on where they help and where they don't
  • Comfortable working on a 100% remote team and able to operate independently within an agile group

It would be great if you also have:

  • Experience building or operating payments systems — payment orchestration, tokenization, acquirer integrations (Worldpay, Stripe, Adyen, Finix, Basis Theory), or PCI-compliant environments
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures (SQS, EventBridge, Kafka)
  • Exposure to observability tooling (SigNoz, Grafana, Datadog, etc.)
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform)

At Xplor, we believe that the best innovation and ideas happen at the intersections of our differences - people of diverse cultures, generations, disciplines, and lived experiences. So even if you think you do not tick all the boxes, we still encourage you to apply.

The average base salary pay range for this position is $95,000 to $105,000

Fully remote option, U.S.-based (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). Preference for candidates in the Kansas City region

๐ŸŽฏ Who is this job for?

This Middle-level Full Stack Software Engineer role suits someone with 4+ years of professional experience who can independently deliver production features across Node.js backends, React frontends, RESTful APIs, PostgreSQL, AWS, CI/CD, and automated testing.

The candidate should be skilled in Git, agile development, microservices, cloud-native systems, observability, secure software practices, and AI-assisted development, with payments, event-driven architecture, Terraform, and PCI compliance experience considered advantageous.

They should be familiar with owning the full software development lifecycle, designing APIs and data models, building user interfaces, integrating payment services, writing documentation and tests, supporting deployments and on-call operations, and responding to production incidents.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a Node.js REST API for payment authorization, capture, refund, and transaction status operations?

I would define clear resource-oriented endpoints, validate requests at the boundary, separate controllers from domain services and persistence, and use consistent error responses. I would also document the API contract, implement idempotency, and add authentication, authorization, logging, and automated tests.

How would you make a payment API operation idempotent?

The client would provide an idempotency key, which the service would store with the request parameters and final result in PostgreSQL. Repeated requests with the same key would return the original result, while conflicting payloads would be rejected.

How would you integrate Stripe or Worldpay while isolating provider-specific behavior?

I would define an internal payment-provider interface for operations such as authorize, capture, refund, and tokenize. Separate adapters would implement that interface for each provider, allowing orchestration, error mapping, retries, and business rules to remain provider-neutral.

How would you design an event-driven payment workflow using SQS and EventBridge?

The API would persist the transaction state before publishing an event, using an outbox or equivalent reliability pattern. SQS would provide durable asynchronous processing, while EventBridge could distribute domain events to other services; consumers would be idempotent and support retries and dead-letter queues.

What PostgreSQL considerations are important for a high-volume payments platform?

I would use appropriate indexes, carefully designed transaction boundaries, and constraints for data integrity, while monitoring query plans and connection usage. I would also consider partitioning or archival strategies for large transaction tables and use Aurora scaling features where appropriate.

How would you build a React interface that safely handles asynchronous payment states?

I would model explicit states such as idle, processing, succeeded, failed, and requires-action rather than relying only on loading flags. The UI would prevent duplicate submissions, display actionable errors, poll or subscribe for pending results when necessary, and use reusable components tested with Jest, Storybook, and Playwright.

How would you secure payment data and support PCI compliance?

I would avoid handling raw card data whenever possible by using provider-hosted fields, tokenization, and Apple Pay or Google Pay tokens. Sensitive data would be excluded from logs, encrypted in transit and at rest, access-controlled through Cognito and service authorization, and covered by audits and documented operational controls.

How would you deploy a Node.js service on AWS using Terraform and CI/CD?

Terraform would define infrastructure such as ECS services, networking, RDS, queues, IAM roles, and monitoring resources. The pipeline would run linting, unit and integration tests, security checks, build an immutable container, deploy through controlled environments, and include approval or rollback guardrails.

How would you investigate a production payment incident?

I would first assess impact using dashboards, logs, traces, transaction metrics, and provider health information, then stabilize the system through rollback, traffic control, or feature flags. After recovery, I would reconcile affected transactions, communicate clearly, document the timeline, and implement preventive actions from the post-incident review.

How would you use AI-assisted development tools without compromising software quality?

I would use them for scaffolding, test generation, refactoring suggestions, documentation, and exploring unfamiliar APIs, but I would not treat generated code as trusted. Every change would be reviewed for correctness, security, PCI implications, performance, licensing, and consistency with the architecture, then validated by automated tests and appropriate human review.

๐Ÿ“‹ Job Summary
