Job Description
About Reveal TechnologyFounded in 2019, Reveal is a dynamic startup revolutionizing field operations by delivering software tools and intelligence to operators in remote, disconnected, and extreme environments. Reveal is the Digital Arms Room for the Modern Warrior — providing the tactical intelligence and automation platform for physical, human, and digital terrain at the edge. Our flagship products include Farsight, a 3D processing and mission planning platform that transforms complex terrain into operational advantage, and Identifi, a secure identity verification solution designed for rapid, trusted identification in dynamic environments. In 2026, Reveal expanded its software portfolio to include Chronos and Anomaly 6, further strengthening its capabilities across the modern battlefield. Reveal exists to serve defense, security, and public safety missions where time is compressed, information is contested, and precision matters. We are scaling our team and technology to meet the accelerating demands of modern warfare and national security.
About the Role
We’re building a data-intensive platform that ingests information from a wide range of external sources, enriches and routes it, and serves rich visualization and analytics on top. We’re looking for a senior engineer who’s comfortable moving across the stack - backend services, data analytics, cloud infrastructure, and a modern web frontend - and who cares as much about how we make decisions as the code we ship.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Ruby on Rails applications with PostgreSQL, including progressive web applications optimized for mobile, desktop, and offline use.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs, database schemas, and data models for mission-critical defense and logistics systems.
- Build and maintain durable, multi-source data ingestion pipelines that transform, deduplicate, and route data across relational, graph, and analytical stores.
- Develop interactive web applications that enable users to visualize, query, and work with complex operational data.
- Design data access patterns that leverage the strengths of relational, graph, and analytical databases.
- Deploy and manage applications on Kubernetes using containerization, reproducible builds, and secure software supply-chain practices.
- Build end-to-end observability across applications and infrastructure, including traces, metrics, logs, and operational dashboards.
- Implement authentication, authorization, security, and compliance best practices, including integrations with DoD systems and secure data pipelines.
- Optimize application and data performance for scalability, reliability, and disconnected or low-connectivity environments.
- Partner with product and design teams to translate mission and user requirements into technical solutions that support military readiness and logistics operations.
- Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews while maintaining high standards for code quality, testing, and maintainability.
Requirements
- 5-10 years of experience in full stack development
- Strong experience with Ruby on Rails, Python, Django, and Docker.
- Experience with React, Angular, Tailwind, Turbo.js, and/or Javascript
- Familiarity with Rust's async ecosystem (e.g., Tokio, Axum, Tower, tracing)
- Hands-on experience deploying and operating services in Kubernetes at scale, including managed clusters, Helm charts, and troubleshooting in-cluster issues.
- Experience building modern web applications using React, TypeScript, Vite, and mapping libraries.
- Experience implementing and maintaining OpenTelemetry instrumentation beyond default configurations.
- Strong API and software abstraction design skills, with experience designing systems across heterogeneous backends and making thoughtful architectural trade offs.
- Excellent technical communication skills, including writing design documents, Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), acceptance criteria, and other engineering documentation before implementation.
Compensation
- Salary ($130,000-$175,000) + Equity
- Salary is determined by the applicant's experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
Benefits
- Medical, Dental, Vision coverage
- HSA/FSA options
- Parental Leave
- 401(k): 100% match for the first 6% contributed
- Unlimited Paid Time Off
- Home Office Stipend

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior Full Stack Engineer with 5–10 years of experience building mission-critical, data-intensive web platforms across backend, frontend, data, and cloud infrastructure.
Required skills include Ruby on Rails, Python/Django, PostgreSQL, React/TypeScript, JavaScript, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, RESTful APIs, database design, data pipelines, OpenTelemetry, security, and familiarity with Rust’s async ecosystem.
The candidate should be experienced in designing scalable architectures, developing offline-capable applications and complex data visualizations, operating Kubernetes services, integrating heterogeneous data stores, optimizing performance, and producing technical documentation while collaborating with product and design teams.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a Ruby on Rails API for mission-critical operational data?
I would define clear REST resources, enforce strong validation and authorization, and use PostgreSQL transactions for consistency. I would also version the API, document contracts, and add comprehensive unit, integration, and performance tests.
How would you build a durable, multi-source data ingestion pipeline?
I would separate ingestion, normalization, enrichment, deduplication, and routing into observable, retryable stages. Idempotency keys, dead-letter handling, schema versioning, and durable queues would help ensure reliable processing and safe replay.
How would you choose between relational, graph, and analytical databases?
PostgreSQL is appropriate for transactional integrity and relational queries, graph storage for relationship-heavy traversals, and analytical stores for large-scale aggregations. I would define ownership and synchronization boundaries explicitly rather than duplicating data without a clear access pattern.
How would you optimize a React and TypeScript application that visualizes complex operational data?
I would use server-side filtering and pagination, memoization, virtualization, and selective rendering to reduce browser workload. Vite-based code splitting, efficient state management, and profiling with realistic datasets would help identify and eliminate bottlenecks.
How would you design a progressive web application for disconnected environments?
I would use service workers, local storage or IndexedDB, cached application assets, and an offline-first synchronization model. Changes would be queued locally, assigned stable identifiers, and reconciled with explicit conflict-resolution rules when connectivity returns.
How do you deploy and operate Rails services on Kubernetes?
I would package services in reproducible Docker images and deploy them with Helm using separate configuration for each environment. Readiness and liveness probes, resource limits, horizontal scaling, secrets management, and structured incident troubleshooting are essential for reliable operations.
How would you implement end-to-end observability with OpenTelemetry?
I would instrument HTTP requests, database calls, background jobs, message processing, and important business operations with traces, metrics, and correlated structured logs. Custom spans and attributes should capture operational context while avoiding sensitive data, with dashboards and alerts tied to service-level objectives.
How would you secure authentication and authorization for a defense-oriented platform?
I would integrate approved identity providers, enforce strong authentication, and apply least-privilege, role- or attribute-based authorization at every API boundary. Audit logs, secure secret handling, encryption in transit and at rest, dependency scanning, and compliance-oriented controls would be part of the design.
What Rust async concepts are relevant when integrating or building high-throughput services?
Tokio provides the asynchronous runtime, while Axum can expose HTTP services and Tower can provide middleware such as timeouts, retries, and authentication. The tracing ecosystem supports structured, correlated diagnostics across asynchronous request flows.
How would you document and communicate an architectural decision before implementation?
I would write an ADR describing the problem, requirements, considered alternatives, trade-offs, security and operational implications, and the chosen design. Acceptance criteria, API contracts, and diagrams help product, design, and engineering teams validate the approach before coding begins.
