Job Description

Fueled is a leading digital strategy, design, and engineering agency. United with 10up – now the brand of our WordPress practice – we are a 300+ person team that has designed and built hundreds of digital products and experiences for brands like Google, Apple, The New York Times, ESPN, Victoria’s Secret, MGM Resorts, Albertsons, and CLEAR.

As a Contract Senior Front-End Engineer, your mission is to architect the user-facing foundation of our digital products, transforming complex design visions into fast, accessible, and elegant experiences. You will bridge creative vision and technical execution across WordPress block themes and Next.js/React applications, demonstrating expertise in both custom CSS craftsmanship and Tailwind-based implementations depending on project requirements. Your versatility between technical environments, strategic integration of AI tools in your workflow, and commitment to performance and accessibility will directly shape how millions of users interact with our clients' brands.

Intentionally remote and globally distributed across six continents, our team thrives in a culture that values flexibility, creativity, and cutting-edge technology. Together, we’re shaping the future of digital experiences.

What you will do:

  • Architect and build large-scale, modular front-end products that set new standards for performance, accessibility, and maintainability while bringing ambitious art direction to life.
  • Elevate the team's front-end craft through insightful code reviews and by establishing patterns for highly componentized systems that others can follow.
  • Transform complex design visions into elegant, functional experiences that balance aesthetic refinement with technical excellence across all browsers and devices.
  • Serve as a bridge between creative vision and technical reality, confidently presenting solutions to clients and team members that move projects forward.
  • Your code will directly impact millions of users through finely crafted websites and tools that make the web more beautiful, functional, and accessible.

What you will achieve:

  • Within your first month, you'll be fully integrated into our workflow—submitting quality pull requests, receiving constructive code reviews, and demonstrating efficiency with Fueled's engineering best practices and systems.
  • By the 60-day mark, you'll demonstrate mastery of Fueled engineering standards, proactively handling QA feedback, and taking ownership of ticket communication while leading a small project or feature implementation.
  • By the 3-month mark, your component architecture and code review contributions will have positively influenced the quality and consistency of the team's front-end output.
  • You will have identified and presented a technical pattern or process that enhances our approach to building maintainable front-end systems, potentially improving workflows across multiple projects.
  • Through client-facing engagements, your technical insights will help shape creative and business outcomes, leaving behind work that exemplifies front-end excellence at Fueled beyond your contract term.

About you:

  • You are driven by a craftsperson's attention to detail in cross-browser/device front-end engineering, confidently moving between WordPress block editor/theme development and Next.js/React projects.
  • Your portfolio or code samples demonstrate problem-solving skills through elegant, maintainable solutions that showcase your technical versatility across different frameworks and environments.
  • You communicate with clarity and confidence, comfortably discussing technical concepts with clients and collaborating effectively with distributed team members.
  • You think in systems and components, excelling at building interfaces that range from custom CSS implementations to efficient Tailwind-based layouts—always prioritizing UX, performance, accessibility, and business objectives.
  • You embrace modern engineering workflows, strategically leveraging AI tools to enhance efficiency and quality while thriving in a remote environment where you take ownership of your work from wherever you choose.

🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is ideal for a Senior Frontend Engineer (Contract) with deep expertise in React, Next.js, and WordPress (block themes), plus strong skills in modern CSS and Tailwind. It suits a frontend craftsperson who can architect scalable component systems, deliver pixel-perfect, accessible UI across browsers, and confidently collaborate with designers and clients in a distributed environment. You should be comfortable leading code quality standards, optimizing performance, leveraging AI tools in your workflow, and owning high-impact user-facing features end-to-end.

πŸ’¬ Potential Interview Questions

  1. How would you architect a scalable and maintainable front-end system for a large WordPress block theme project?
I would create a highly componentized architecture using reusable Gutenberg blocks, structured theme.json configuration, and modular SCSS or Tailwind utilities. Clear separation of concerns and consistent naming conventions ensure scalability and long-term maintainability.

  2. What is your approach to building high-performance Next.js applications?
I leverage static generation (SSG), incremental static regeneration (ISR), and server-side rendering (SSR) where appropriate. Code splitting, image optimization, and careful bundle analysis help minimize load times and improve Core Web Vitals.

  3. How do you ensure accessibility (a11y) across complex front-end projects?
I follow WCAG guidelines, use semantic HTML, ensure keyboard navigation support, and validate ARIA attributes. I also test with screen readers and automated tools like Lighthouse or Axe to catch accessibility gaps.

  4. When would you choose custom CSS over Tailwind, and vice versa?
I use Tailwind for rapid development and design system consistency, especially in component-driven projects. Custom CSS or SCSS is preferable when implementing highly bespoke art direction requiring fine-grained styling control.

  5. How do you handle cross-browser and cross-device compatibility issues?
I rely on progressive enhancement, thorough QA testing across modern browsers, and tools like BrowserStack. I also avoid unsupported CSS/JS features or provide fallbacks when necessary.

  6. Describe your approach to component architecture in React or Next.js.
I design atomic, reusable components with clear props contracts and minimal side effects. State is managed thoughtfully (Context API or external stores when necessary), and business logic is abstracted into hooks for reusability.

  7. How do you integrate AI tools into your front-end workflow without compromising quality?
I use AI tools for scaffolding, refactoring suggestions, and test generation, but validate all output through manual review and linting/testing pipelines. AI accelerates productivity while engineering standards ensure quality.

  8. What strategies do you use to optimize front-end performance for high-traffic websites?
I minimize bundle size, lazy-load non-critical components, optimize images and fonts, and reduce render-blocking resources. Monitoring performance metrics ensures continuous optimization.

  9. How do you collaborate effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed team?
I prioritize clear async communication, detailed pull request descriptions, and proactive status updates. I also participate actively in code reviews and design discussions to maintain alignment.

  10. How would you translate a complex design vision into a technically feasible front-end solution?
I begin by analyzing design intent, identifying reusable patterns, and clarifying edge cases with designers. Then I propose a scalable component strategy that balances visual fidelity, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.
