Job Description
Join Pigment: The AI Platform Redefining Business Planning
Pigment is the AI-powered business planning and performance management platform built for agility and scale. We connect people, data, and processes in one intuitive platform, with AI agents that work alongside every team, from Finance to HR, to build, adapt, and align strategic plans in real time.
Founded in 2019, Pigment is one of the fastest-growing SaaS companies globally, passing $100M in ARR in 2026 and doubling revenue for the second year in a row. Industry leaders like Unilever, Uber, Anthropic, Snowflake, and Siemens use Pigment every day to make better-informed decisions and navigate any scenario with confidence.
In October 2026, we raised a $250M Series E at a $2.3B valuation, bringing our total funding to $650M+. Today we’re a growing team of 700+ across Paris, London, New York, Toronto, San Francisco, and Austin, and we’ve been named a Visionary in the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Financial Planning Software two years running.
At Pigment, we take smart risks, celebrate bold ideas, and challenge the status quo - all while working as one team. If you’re driven by innovation and ready to make an impact at scale, we’d love to hear from you.
You’ll join Pigment’s Reporting & Collaboration community, working as a senior hands-on Frontend Engineer on some of the most complex parts of the product.
This community is responsible for how users access, configure and interact with their data. That creates significant frontend challenges around large-scale datasets, filtering, visualisation, complex configuration and increasingly AI-powered experiences.
On the engineering part:
- Spend approximately 80% of your time as a hands-on engineer, designing, building and shipping production features.
- Work on complex, data-heavy frontend problems where performance, usability and scale all matter.
- Build sophisticated interfaces for displaying, filtering and interacting with large datasets.
- Work with React, TypeScript and JavaScript, while contributing to the wider technical decisions behind the product.
- Partner closely with Product Managers, Product Designers and Engineers to take features from problem definition through to production.
- Make pragmatic engineering decisions based on the needs of the product and its users, rather than pursuing technical complexity for its own sake.
- Contribute to areas across Reporting & Collaboration depending on business needs and your interests, including data extraction and filtering, visualisation, complex configuration and emerging AI experiences.
- Use modern engineering tooling, with Pigment teams working across GCP, CircleCI and AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot.
This is not a traditional Engineering Manager role where you step away from the code. You will remain a senior individual contributor and be expected to ship.
On the people management part, here is what it entails:
At Pigment, people management and technical leadership are deliberately separated.
Tech Leads lead the technical direction of individual teams. Engineering Managers focus on developing engineers as people while remaining hands-on engineers themselves.
- Spend approximately 20% of your time on people management.
- Gradually take on direct reports after establishing yourself as an IC during your probation period.
- Coach engineers across different teams within the Reporting & Collaboration community.
- Support engineers with career progression, development, feedback and performance.
- Run regular 1:1s and help engineers understand what they need to do to progress.
- Set clear expectations and provide actionable feedback.
- Handle difficult performance conversations when necessary and follow through with clear development plans.
- Partner with Tech Leads to understand how your reports are performing technically without taking ownership of the Tech Lead's responsibilities.
- Help create an environment where strong engineers can continue to develop while doing their best work.
Engineering Managers typically support engineers across multiple teams within their community rather than "owning" a single engineering team.
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who is both a strong senior Frontend Engineer and an experienced people manager.
- Significant professional software-engineering experience, with the technical depth expected of a senior engineer.
- Strong recent hands-on frontend engineering experience.
- Production experience with React, TypeScript and/or JavaScript.
- Previous formal people-management experience. Ideally, you have already managed engineers rather than looking for your first management opportunity.
- Experience owning areas such as coaching, career development, feedback and performance management, not simply mentoring engineers or leading projects.
- Experience building complex product interfaces, ideally within B2B SaaS, enterprise software, analytics, data platforms or another sophisticated data-heavy product.
- Experience solving frontend problems involving areas such as large datasets, visualisation, filtering, configuration, performance or complex workflows.
- A strong product mindset. You care about what you're building, who is using it and whether it genuinely solves their problem.
- Strong collaboration skills across Engineering, Product and Design.
- The ability and desire to remain deeply hands-on in the code while managing people.
- The autonomy expected of a senior IC: once you understand the problem, you can work with the team to move it forward without needing constant direction.
- Fluent English. French is not required.
What you will get
- Competitive salary
- Equity
- The best health insurance with Alan Blue is entirely free for you and your family 💙
- Trust and flexible working hours
- Brand new offices in the heart of Paris, London, New York, and, Toronto
- Remote-friendly environment
£90,000 - £140,000 a year

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior-level Engineering Manager who remains a hands-on Frontend Engineer, with significant experience in React, TypeScript and/or JavaScript and formal people management.
The ideal candidate has strong skills in frontend architecture, performance, data-heavy interfaces, visualisation, filtering, complex configuration, product thinking and cross-functional collaboration.
They should be familiar with designing and shipping sophisticated SaaS features, working with large datasets, partnering with Product and Design, coaching engineers, managing performance and supporting career development.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a React and TypeScript interface for displaying and filtering millions of data points?
I would avoid loading the full dataset into the browser and use server-side pagination, filtering, sorting, or aggregation where appropriate. On the client, I would combine virtualization, memoization, stable component boundaries, and carefully managed query caching to keep rendering and interaction responsive.
How would you optimize rendering performance in a data-heavy React application?
I would profile first using browser performance tools and React Profiler, then address unnecessary renders, expensive calculations, large DOM trees, and inefficient state updates. Techniques such as list virtualization, code splitting, memoization, debouncing, and incremental rendering can improve performance when applied based on measured bottlenecks.
How would you structure state management for complex filters, configuration, and collaborative workflows?
I would separate server state, URL state, local UI state, and shared application state rather than placing everything in one global store. I would model configuration explicitly, validate state transitions, and use typed actions or domain-focused hooks to make changes predictable and testable.
What TypeScript practices would you apply when building a complex frontend platform?
I would use strict compiler settings, discriminated unions, generics, and domain-specific types to make invalid states difficult to represent. API boundaries should be typed and validated at runtime when data comes from external services, while shared types should remain focused to avoid excessive coupling.
How would you design an accessible data grid with sorting, filtering, and keyboard navigation?
I would use appropriate semantic roles and labels, ensure all functionality is keyboard accessible, and provide clear focus management and announcements for dynamic changes. For large grids, I would carefully implement virtualization while preserving logical row and column navigation and testing with screen readers and automated accessibility tools.
How would you approach visualizing large datasets without overwhelming users or the browser?
I would clarify the analytical goal first, then choose an appropriate visualization with aggregation, sampling, progressive loading, or level-of-detail techniques. The design should preserve accuracy, provide useful interactions such as zooming and filtering, and avoid rendering more graphical elements than the user can meaningfully interpret.
How would you test a complex React feature that combines data fetching, filtering, and user configuration?
I would use unit tests for pure transformation and validation logic, component tests for interaction behavior, and end-to-end tests for critical workflows. Tests should cover loading, empty, error, permission, race-condition, and large-data scenarios, with accessibility checks included in the relevant test suites.
How would you prevent stale data and race conditions when users rapidly change filters?
I would use a query-management approach that supports cancellation, request deduplication, cache keys, and clear loading states. Requests should be associated with the current filter version so that late responses cannot overwrite newer results, and debouncing can reduce unnecessary traffic for high-frequency inputs.
How would you integrate an AI-powered experience into a React product safely and effectively?
I would treat AI output as uncertain, make its scope and status visible, and provide user control to review, edit, accept, or reject suggestions. The frontend should handle streaming, errors, retries, permissions, and potentially unsafe or invalid output while keeping sensitive data and authorization enforced by the backend.
How would you balance hands-on engineering work with engineering management responsibilities?
I would protect focused time for production engineering while using regular one-to-ones, structured feedback, and clear development goals for management work. I would partner with Tech Leads on technical performance and direction, focusing my management responsibility on coaching, progression, expectations, and sustainable team effectiveness.
