Job Description

Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack (Member Experience)

Remote

Sidecar Health is redefining health insurance. Our mission is to make excellent healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone. We know that to accomplish this lofty mission, we need driven people who will make things happen.

The passionate people who make up Sidecar Health’s team come from all over, with backgrounds as tech leaders, policy makers, healthcare professionals, and beyond. And they all have one thing in common—the desire to fix a broken system and make it more personalized, affordable, and transparent.

If you want to use your talents to transform healthcare in the United States, come join us!

About the Role

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our Member Experience engineering team — the team that builds the products our members use every day to find care, understand their benefits, submit claims, and manage their health plans.

This is a high-impact individual contributor role where you'll own the full product experience, from the APIs that power our platform to the interfaces our members interact with. You'll work directly with product and design to ship features that make healthcare more accessible, and you'll use AI tools as a core part of how you build. If you move fast, care deeply about craft, and want your work to matter, this is the role for you.

**MUST BE BASED IN CALIFORNIA, OREGON OR WASHINGTON, This role is not eligible for sponsorship**

What You'll Do

  • Build and ship full-stack features end-to-end across our member-facing web applications
  • Work primarily in TypeScript — it's our language of choice across the stack
  • Ship confidently through our GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines and deploy web applications on Vercel, owning your changes from pull request to production
  • Design scalable systems and make deliberate architectural tradeoffs between performance, maintainability, and speed to ship
  • Build AI-powered member experiences — integrating LLM APIs and working with agent harnesses and frameworks (e.g., Eve, Strands) where they add real value
  • Write clean, well-tested, production-grade code with a high bar for quality
  • Partner with product, design, and stakeholders across the business to translate requirements into great software
  • Contribute to engineering standards through code reviews, technical discussion, and better defaults

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with full-stack ownership of production systems
  • Deep TypeScript expertise, with strong React and Next.js experience building modern, responsive web applications
  • Comfort owning deployments end-to-end — experience with platforms like Vercel and CI/CD pipelines like GitHub Actions
  • Habitual, fluent use of AI tools (Claude, Cursor, etc.) as part of your daily workflow
  • Experience building with LLMs — API integrations, agentic workflows, or frameworks/harnesses such as Eve or Strands — or a strong drive to get there quickly
  • Solid fundamentals in system design, testing, debugging, and code review
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Nice to haves:

  • React Native experience for our mobile surfaces
  • Familiarity with Java — we have some legacy Java services you may occasionally touch, but no Java expertise is needed for this role
  • Experience with AWS

The Reality

This is a startup. We move fast. We prioritize impact over polish. We expect:

  • Bias for action — ship, learn, iterate
  • Ownership — you design it, build it, run it
  • Pragmatism — solve real problems, not theoretical ones
  • Resilience — ambiguity comes with the territory

Healthcare is complex and broken. The work matters.

What You'll Get

  • Competitive salary, bonus opportunity, and equity package
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits
  • A 401k retirement plan
  • Paid vacation and company holidays
  • Opportunity to make an impact at a rapidly growing mission-driven company transforming healthcare in the U.S.

In taking a market-based approach to compensation, base pay may vary depending on location. Additionally, base pay may vary considerably depending on job-related skills and experience. The current expected salary range for this position is: $140,000 - $185,000.

Sidecar Health is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to building a diverse team. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status or disability status.

๐ŸŽฏ Who is this job for?

Suitable for a Senior software engineer with 5+ years of experience owning and delivering production full-stack systems, based in California, Oregon, or Washington and authorized to work without sponsorship.

Required skills include advanced TypeScript, React, Next.js, system design, testing, debugging, code review, GitHub Actions, Vercel deployments, and fluent use of AI development tools, with experience or strong interest in LLM APIs and agentic frameworks.

The candidate should be familiar with building member-facing web applications end to end, designing scalable architectures, integrating AI-powered features, collaborating with product and design, and independently taking work from requirements and pull request through production.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a full-stack member feature using TypeScript, Next.js, and a backend API?

I would begin by defining the user flow and API contract, then implement the backend domain logic and validation before connecting it to a responsive React interface. I would include typed API clients, loading and error states, automated tests, observability, and a deployment plan.

What are the key considerations when building a production Next.js application for member-facing healthcare workflows?

I would carefully choose between server-side rendering, static generation, and client-side rendering based on data sensitivity, freshness, and performance needs. I would also enforce authorization on the server, avoid exposing protected data to the client unnecessarily, and provide accessible, resilient user experiences.

How would you structure TypeScript types across a React and API-based application?

I would define clear domain models and request and response schemas at the API boundary, using runtime validation in addition to compile-time types. Shared contracts or generated clients can reduce drift, while carefully separating persistence models from public API and UI models improves maintainability.

How would you design an LLM-powered feature for members while protecting accuracy and sensitive healthcare information?

I would constrain the model with approved data sources, structured outputs, clear system instructions, and deterministic business rules for decisions that require correctness. I would minimize and protect personal health information, log safely, evaluate responses with representative cases, and provide escalation or human-readable safeguards when the model is uncertain.

How would you evaluate whether an agentic workflow or framework such as Eve or Strands is appropriate for a feature?

I would use an agentic workflow only when dynamic tool selection or multi-step reasoning provides meaningful value over a deterministic service. I would define explicit tools, permissions, budgets, timeouts, retry behavior, and observability, then compare the approach against a simpler implementation using quality, latency, cost, and operational risk.

What testing strategy would you use for a feature that helps members find care or understand benefits?

I would combine unit tests for domain rules, integration tests for API and database behavior, and component tests for important UI states. Critical member journeys should also have end-to-end tests, including authorization failures, incomplete data, provider errors, and accessibility checks.

How would you design GitHub Actions and Vercel deployments for safe, frequent releases?

Pull requests should run formatting, type checking, linting, unit tests, integration tests, and relevant build validation. Successful changes can deploy to preview environments, while production releases should use protected branches, environment-specific secrets, rollback capability, and post-deployment monitoring.

How do you approach system design tradeoffs between speed to ship, performance, and maintainability in a startup?

I would choose the simplest design that satisfies current requirements while documenting assumptions and clear extension points. I would prioritize high-impact performance work based on measurements, avoid premature abstraction, and isolate change-prone integrations behind well-defined interfaces.

How would you secure a member-facing application that handles health plan and claims information?

I would enforce authentication and authorization on every protected server-side operation, validate all inputs, and use least-privilege access to services and data. I would also protect secrets, apply secure session and cookie settings, audit sensitive actions, avoid leaking information in logs, and use monitoring to detect abnormal access.

How do you use AI tools such as Claude or Cursor in your daily engineering workflow without reducing code quality?

I use AI tools for exploration, test generation, refactoring suggestions, documentation, and debugging, but I remain responsible for design and verification. I review generated code carefully, provide narrowly scoped context, run the full validation suite, and avoid sending confidential data or accepting unverified security-sensitive changes.
