Job Description
Health can’t wait.
Not for symptoms to get worse. Not for a six‑month appointment. Not for a system to catch up. But that’s exactly how healthcare works today. You wait, until you can’t.
Alan exists to end the wait.
Health is a universal right, and we believe this right can only become real when it’s coupled with prevention. We need to stop treating health as something we repair and start treating it as something we build, every day. It’s not solely a question of willpower. It’s the healthcare system itself that needs to work for everyone, in a sustainable way.
So we are building the new standard in prevention insurance. Alan is the first company that integrates insurance, prevention, and care into a single, acclaimed user experience.
We are on an incredible journey to build a global leading company, with a unique culture. We already partner with 40K+ companies of all sizes, serving more than 1M+ members, and have reached €800M+ in ARR.
Prevention as the new norm. That's what we're building with our team of 1000+ people. If it speaks to you: we're hiring across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada. And beyond.
At Alan, we want people to find the right product to take care of themselves, as early and as easily as possible. Getting a new pair of glasses usually means an appointment, a lost prescription, 47 frames tried on in a store, and a two-week delay. Most people put it off for months.
The Shop is how Alan members get glasses, lenses and well-being products in a few clicks, covered by their insurance when possible. Most e-commerce teams are incentivized to sell more. We're incentivized to get members the right product at the right time for their health.
We're looking for a fullstack engineer to join the Shop crew. One brief: help our members choose what is right for them, when it is right for them, in a few clicks. Everything else, we figure out together.
About the Shop crew
The Shop crew is a fully autonomous product team that owns the whole lifecycle of the Shop: not just the code, but the whole business. Product managers, product marketers, ops specialists, designers, data scientists and engineers work side by side on one mission.
What we've built so far:
-
An end-to-end optics experience: frames and lenses, virtual try-on, prescription scanning, and checkout priced against each member's coverage.
-
One commerce platform behind the whole Shop and its three verticals.
-
A growing well-being catalog: about 14 brands and 170 products today, thousands soon.
The Shop is growing fast: more products, smoother flows, and an experience that's more and more integrated into the rest of Alan for our members. The crew needs to grow too, and that means plenty of new opportunities for engineers.
What you'll do
The Shop is one of the most varied crews in Alan Engineering. In the same week, you might:
-
🔌 Build integrations with our customized e-commerce back office, our in-house virtual try-on, suppliers and partner opticians.
-
🛍️ Ship member-facing flows: dynamic catalogs, purchase flows tailored to each member's coverage, prescription scanning, returns, and out-of-pocket purchases like lens upgrades and extra pairs.
-
🌿 Scale the catalog beyond optics, with discovery and personalized navigation that still work at thousands of products.
-
⚖️ Navigate legal ground: e-commerce rules, invoicing, France's 100% Santé reform, and supplier compliance. Selling medical devices is not like selling socks.
-
📣 Help products reach members in the Alan app, in campaigns, and through Mo, our AI health assistant. A shop that can't promote its products is just a warehouse.
-
📦 Work with ops on orders, deliveries and customer service, so a two-day delay never surprises a member.
You won't just write code. You'll question supplier contracts, debate marketing copy, and debug prescription-scanning logic. Some days it feels less like building software and more like running a small business. That's the point. And the impact is direct: when someone orders their glasses faster, they literally see better, sooner.
What we're looking for
-
8+ years building scalable software, with full-stack experience across backend and frontend.
-
A strong product mindset. You want to understand the why before the how, and you enjoy working with members, ops, legal and marketing.
-
Ownership from start to finish: you frame the problem, ship the solution, and watch the numbers afterwards.
-
Comfort with ambiguity and complex problems. You help shape the scope instead of waiting for a spec.
-
Clear communication with non-engineers, in English (French is a plus, since our first market is France).
-
Humility, curiosity, and a real interest in making healthcare more accessible.
Bonus points
-
Experience with e-commerce: catalogs, checkout, payments, order management, or a headless commerce platform like Saleor.
-
Curiosity about where e-commerce meets healthcare.
-
Experience with mobile (React Native) or with LLM-powered product features.
How we work
-
Our stack: React and React Native on the frontend, Python/Flask and PostgreSQL on the backend, all in one monorepo. Saleor powers our commerce back office.
-
We deploy daily, and the engineers who make product decisions are the ones who build them.
-
We use AI coding agents every day to move faster and focus on the hard problems.
-
You own decisions, outcomes and a whole domain, and your incentive is to build what's best for members.
⭐ The Engineering team ⭐
In our engineering team, we build the infrastructure, interfaces, and applications to provide first-class service to our members, health professionals, and even ourselves!
Being an engineer at Alan means joining a team of talented, committed and passionate engineers, with a lot of product interaction.
We move fast, with a lot of ownership, and are proud to tackle big problems!
Our process is very simple: those who make product decisions are the same ones who build them.
Our stack is React, Python/Flask, PostgreSQL in a monorepo. If you are not familiar with this stack but are a keen learner, it is totally fine. We deploy daily and believe in distributed ownership - you build it, you own it.

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior Fullstack Software Engineer with 8+ years of experience building scalable, customer-focused software across backend and frontend systems. Required skills include fullstack development, ideally with React, Python/Flask, PostgreSQL, and e-commerce platforms, plus strong product thinking, ownership, communication, and comfort with ambiguity. The candidate should be familiar with building integrations, e-commerce catalogs and checkout flows, payments, order management, personalized user experiences, compliance-related features, and collaboration with product, operations, legal, marketing, and other non-technical teams.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a scalable product catalog for thousands of optical and well-being products?
I would model products, variants, availability, pricing, coverage eligibility, and supplier data separately, with PostgreSQL indexes supporting the main discovery queries. I would combine server-side filtering and pagination with cached or denormalized read models where necessary, while keeping catalog updates idempotent and observable.
How would you implement checkout pricing based on a member’s insurance coverage?
I would make coverage evaluation a backend-owned domain service that validates eligibility, reimbursement limits, deductibles, and out-of-pocket amounts using immutable inputs. The frontend would display the calculation, but the backend would recalculate and authorize the final price during checkout to prevent inconsistencies or tampering.
What considerations are important when integrating Saleor with internal services and external suppliers?
I would define clear ownership for products, inventory, pricing, orders, and fulfillment, then synchronize systems through versioned APIs or events. Integrations should use retries, idempotency keys, timeouts, structured logging, and reconciliation jobs to handle duplicate messages and partial failures safely.
How would you design an order workflow supporting payments, supplier fulfillment, delivery, returns, and customer service?
I would represent the order as an explicit state machine with valid transitions, audit history, and separate statuses for payment, fulfillment, delivery, and return processing. Each transition would be triggered by reliable events or commands and would be observable so operations teams can identify and resolve stuck orders.
How would you build a prescription-scanning feature while protecting medical and personal data?
I would process images through a secure, access-controlled service, minimize retention, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and avoid exposing sensitive information in logs or analytics. Extracted prescription values should be validated, clearly confirmed by the member, and reviewed through fallback flows when confidence is low.
How would you structure a Flask and PostgreSQL API used by React and React Native clients?
I would organize the backend around domain modules with typed request and response schemas, explicit authorization checks, consistent error formats, and versioned contracts where changes may affect clients. Database transactions would protect critical operations, while background jobs would handle slow or retryable work such as supplier synchronization.
How would you prevent race conditions when multiple users or services update stock, coverage, or an order?
I would use PostgreSQL transactions with appropriate row-level locking or optimistic concurrency controls, depending on contention and access patterns. Critical operations such as inventory reservation and checkout should be idempotent and should fail safely when the underlying version or availability has changed.
How would you optimize a React catalog and checkout flow for performance and usability?
I would use server-side pagination or search, debounced filtering, stable query caching, code splitting, and carefully managed component state to avoid unnecessary renders. I would also measure Core Web Vitals and key funnel metrics, while ensuring loading, error, and recovery states are clear on both web and mobile.
How would you test a fullstack feature that changes coverage-based pricing and checkout?
I would combine unit tests for coverage and pricing rules, integration tests for Flask and PostgreSQL transactions, contract tests for external services, and end-to-end tests covering representative member journeys. I would include boundary cases such as exhausted coverage, lens upgrades, refunds, duplicate requests, and supplier failures.
How would you safely deliver daily deployments for a critical commerce feature?
I would use small backward-compatible changes, automated checks, database migration safeguards, feature flags, and gradual rollouts with monitoring. Success criteria should include technical signals and product metrics such as checkout completion, payment failures, order delays, and support contacts, with a documented rollback or mitigation plan.
