Job Description

About Us:

Monarch is a powerful, all-in-one personal finance platform designed to help make the complexity of finances feel simple again. Since launching in 2021, we've become the top-recommended personal finance app by users and experts. Our goal? To take the stress out of finances so our members can focus on what truly matters.

We are a team of do-ers led by experienced entrepreneurs who are passionate about helping our members reach their financial goals. We're hyper focused on building a product people love, and on finding every edge that helps us do that better. AI is core to how we operate: every person on the team uses it as a partner to sharpen judgment, move faster, and expand what's possible. We're not looking for tool mastery, we're looking for fluency and curiosity. What matters is that AI is part of how you work today and that you're actively raising your own bar on how to use it well.

As a fully remote company (even before COVID!), we welcome applicants from almost anywhere. Our team collaborates synchronously mostly from 9 AM – 2 PM PT and embraces asynchronous work to stay connected across time zones.

Join us on our mission to transform lives by simplifying money, together.

The Role:

We are always looking for talented Engineers to join our team as we continue to grow and scale and have several pods that will be hiring later this year. Here's some additional information on our Engineering pods/focus areas at Monarch:

  • Core Product: The Core Product team is responsible for building and improving our core Monarch features like budgeting, goals, and reports across our web and mobile platforms.

  • Growth: The Growth team works on building product experiences that help Monarch to reach more users, and to help those users through the path to financial success using Monarch. They work on rapid experimentation, a/b testing, improving our onboarding flow and initiatives around customer engagement and retention.

  • Aggregation: The Aggregation team owns the process that allows our users to see your whole financial life in one view. They handle all of data connectivity, making sure all of your financial data is delivered safely and accurately into Monarch.

  • Infra/Platform: This team handles our infrastructure and developer tooling to help the rest of the team ship faster and more reliably.

  • Security: We place the utmost importance on our customers' security and privacy. Our security team improves our overall security posture and helps individual teams maintain a focus on security and privacy.

If you're excited about what we're creating, and passionate about helping people reach their financial goals, then please apply below. Include a note (can be as short as a couple sentences or as long as a few paragraphs) and tell us more about the work you love to do, and why you're excited to join Monarch. We look forward to hearing from you!

What you'll bring:

  • A "product-centric" mindset and pride in building something people love (even our Infra/Platform engineers are passionate about product).

  • Experience with (or interest in learning) our tech stack:

    • Front End: React/Typescript, React Native, Apollo (GraphQL) for API requests

    • Back-End: Python/Django, GraphQL/Graphene, PostgreSQL, Redis

    • AWS, Terraform, Docker, ECS, EC2

    • CI/CD (Circle CI)

  • Comfort working across the entire stack when needed regardless of where your expertise lies to ensure we can deliver high caliber products to our users.

  • Working collaboratively with other functions in a remote environment. You value others' input and know how to integrate it into your work.

  • Comfort working with a lot of autonomy and some ambiguity.

  • Sharing your knowledge and helping your team grow is something you’re passionate about. You believe in the power of good documentation and effective mentoring.

Benefits :

  • Work wherever you want! As a fully remote company with no central office, we want you to work wherever you are happiest and most productive. Whether that’s out of your home, a co-working space, or elsewhere.

  • Competitive cash and equity compensation in a hyper growth, early stage company 🚀.

  • Stipend to set-up your ideal working environment.

  • Competitive Benefit Plans for employees based on your location (e.g. in the US we offer: Medical, dental and vision benefits and the ability to contribute to a 401k plan).

  • Unlimited PTO.

  • 3 day weekend every month! We take off the “First Friday” every month to focus on rest, recuperation, or just having fun!

Equal Opportunity & Non-Discrimination

🎯 Who is this job for?

This opportunity is best suited for Middle to Senior-level engineers who can work independently and contribute across product, growth, aggregation, infrastructure, platform, or security teams.

Required skills include a product-centric mindset, full-stack flexibility, collaborative remote communication, and experience with or willingness to learn React, TypeScript, React Native, GraphQL, Python/Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, Terraform, Docker, ECS, EC2, and CI/CD.

Candidates should be familiar with building and scaling user-facing financial products, developing APIs and integrations, improving infrastructure and reliability, experimenting on product growth, protecting data, documenting solutions, mentoring teammates, and working effectively in ambiguous environments.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

How would you structure a React and TypeScript application that consumes a GraphQL API through Apollo?

I would define strongly typed queries and mutations, use Apollo Client for normalized caching and loading or error states, and keep data-fetching concerns separate from presentation components. I would also establish consistent cache invalidation and optimistic-update patterns where they improve user experience.

How would you design a GraphQL API using Django and Graphene for budgeting and financial goals?

I would model the domain clearly in Django, expose narrowly scoped GraphQL types and resolvers, and enforce authorization at the resolver or service layer. Complex business rules should live in reusable services rather than being duplicated across resolvers.

How would you optimize PostgreSQL queries for reports over large volumes of financial transactions?

I would inspect query plans with EXPLAIN ANALYZE, add appropriate indexes, avoid unnecessary joins and columns, and use aggregation strategies suited to the access pattern. For frequently requested reports, I might introduce precomputed summaries or carefully designed materialized views.

How would you use Redis in a financial application?

Redis can support short-lived caching, distributed locks, rate limiting, and background-job coordination. Cached data should have explicit expiration and invalidation rules, and it should never be treated as the authoritative source for financial records.

What challenges would you consider when building a React Native feature alongside web functionality?

I would share domain logic, types, and API operations where practical while respecting platform-specific navigation, storage, and UI conventions. I would also test performance, offline behavior, and accessibility independently on both mobile platforms.

How would you deploy a Django and GraphQL service on AWS using Docker and ECS?

I would package the service in a reproducible Docker image, store it in a container registry, and run it on ECS with appropriate task definitions, health checks, networking, secrets, and autoscaling. Infrastructure should be managed with Terraform so environments remain consistent and changes are reviewable.

How would you design a reliable CI/CD pipeline using CircleCI?

The pipeline should run formatting, linting, type checks, unit tests, integration tests, and security checks before building an immutable image. Deployments should use environment-specific approvals or automated promotion, include database migration handling, and provide a rollback strategy.

How would you safely handle financial data aggregation from external institutions?

I would isolate provider integrations behind a consistent internal interface, encrypt sensitive data in transit and at rest, and implement retries with exponential backoff and idempotency. The system should track synchronization status, preserve data lineage, and clearly distinguish pending, stale, and confirmed information.

How would you implement an A/B test for an onboarding flow?

I would define the hypothesis and success metrics first, assign users through a stable randomized experiment service, and ensure exposure is recorded consistently. I would monitor guardrail metrics such as errors, retention, and conversion quality before drawing conclusions.

How would you improve security and privacy across a full-stack financial product?

I would apply least-privilege access, strong authentication and authorization, secret management, input validation, audit logging, dependency scanning, and secure defaults throughout the stack. Sensitive operations should be tested for common vulnerabilities and reviewed with privacy, retention, and incident-response requirements in mind.
