Job Description
About Solace
Healthcare in the U.S. is fundamentally broken. The system is so complex that 88% of U.S. adults do not have the health literacy necessary to navigate it without help. Solace cuts through the red tape of healthcare by pairing patients with expert advocates and giving them the tools to make better decisions—and get better outcomes.
We're a Series C startup, founded in 2022 and backed by Inspired Capital, Craft Ventures, Torch Capital, Menlo Ventures, Signalfire, and IVP. Our U.S. based team is lean, mission-driven, and growing quickly.
Solace isn't a place to coast. We're here to redefine healthcare—and that demands urgency, precision, and heart. If you're looking to stretch yourself, sharpen your edge, and do the best work of your life alongside a team that cares deeply, you're in the right place. We’re intense, and we like it that way.

About the Role
As a Full Stack Engineer, you’ll join a spectacularly talented team of fellow engineers—but you will also be expected to independently own your product workflow from initial design requirements through deployment. You will be expected to move aggressively, and you will commit code daily, but you’ll get that rush of seeing your work in the wild with live users on a regular basis as you build a revolutionary product from scratch.
You are an experienced engineer who can identify problems and architect the highest-quality solutions. You are curious and enjoy working on ambiguous problems where the solutions are not (yet) well-defined. You take pride in your craft, have impeccable communication skills, and you absorb feedback exceptionally well. You aren’t afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Above all, you enjoy taking ownership and are stifled by large organizations.
What You’ll Do
-
Analyze product requirements and produce high-quality, production-ready code while creating a best-in-class user experience.
-
Build and maintain new user-facing features with everything from database models to UI components.
-
Be autonomous. You’ll take full ownership of your work, and you take responsibility and accountability for every last detail, every step of the way.
-
Be a collaborator. You’ll work with other engineers and cross-functional partners in product and design to build a world-class product and lead new initiatives to improve our user experience.
-
Create services and APIs to drive existing and new features for web apps.
-
Maintain the health of our systems and codebase, refactor and make improvements, and keep our systems robust and resilient.
-
Write clear specs to ensure product/code quality for stress-free deployment.
-
Drive large releases to production on a continuous deployment cadence.
What You Bring to the Table
-
Experience working in a start-up environment.
-
5+ years of relevant experience on both frontend and backend development.
-
Strong React fundamentals and a background working with Typescript/Node.
-
An intuitive understanding of what it takes to create delightful, consumer-oriented experiences.
-
Strong communication skills that help you influence product direction and help collaborative visions come to life.
-
Extreme bias toward action and execution. You get antsy if you’re not writing code, improving the codebase, and vigilantly enhancing the systems that represent the big-thinking work.
Our Tech Stack
-
Typescript across all our applications
-
NestJS API with TypeORM
-
Postgres
-
Redis
-
React
-
Custom UI library built on shadcn
-
Tailwind
-
Heroku
Applicants must be based in the United States.

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior Full Stack Engineer with 5+ years of experience, ideally in a fast-paced startup environment, who is based in the United States.
The candidate should be skilled in React, TypeScript, Node.js/NestJS, APIs, PostgreSQL, Redis, TypeORM, Tailwind, and continuous deployment, with strong communication, ownership, and product judgment.
They should be comfortable independently delivering end-to-end, user-facing features from requirements and database models through UI development, testing, deployment, system maintenance, refactoring, and cross-functional collaboration.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a full-stack feature using React, NestJS, TypeORM, and Postgres from requirements through deployment?
I would clarify requirements and acceptance criteria, model the data, define the API contract, implement the NestJS service and TypeORM entities, and build the React UI with appropriate loading and error states. I would add tests, observability, and a deployment plan, then release incrementally through the continuous deployment pipeline.
How do you structure a maintainable NestJS API for a growing healthcare product?
I would organize the API into cohesive modules with controllers, services, repositories, DTOs, and validation boundaries. I would keep business logic out of controllers, use consistent error handling and authorization, and document contracts so frontend and backend teams can work independently.
How would you model and query healthcare-related data with TypeORM and Postgres?
I would identify entities, relationships, constraints, and lifecycle requirements before creating normalized schemas and migrations. I would use appropriate indexes, transactions for multi-step updates, parameterized queries, and carefully reviewed query plans for performance-sensitive paths.
How would you prevent sensitive patient information from being exposed through APIs or logs?
I would enforce authentication, authorization, least-privilege access, input validation, and secure transport throughout the system. Sensitive fields should be minimized in responses, excluded or redacted from logs, encrypted where appropriate, and covered by audit trails and security-focused tests.
How do you manage client-side state and asynchronous data flows in React and TypeScript?
I separate server state from local UI state and define strongly typed API contracts to prevent inconsistent data handling. Components should explicitly handle loading, empty, success, and failure states while avoiding unnecessary requests through caching, invalidation, and predictable update patterns.
How would you build a reusable and accessible interface with React, shadcn, and Tailwind?
I would compose accessible primitives from the custom UI library, keep visual conventions centralized, and use Tailwind tokens consistently rather than duplicating ad hoc styles. I would verify keyboard navigation, semantic HTML, focus management, contrast, responsive behavior, and screen-reader support.
When would you use Redis in this stack, and what risks would you consider?
Redis is useful for short-lived caching, rate limiting, distributed locks, sessions, and queues where appropriate. I would define TTLs and invalidation rules, avoid treating the cache as the source of truth, and design for cache misses, stale data, outages, and serialization consistency.
How would you design a resilient API and deployment process on Heroku?
I would use configuration through environment variables, health checks, structured logging, database migrations, timeouts, retries with backoff, and graceful shutdown behavior. Releases should use staged changes, automated tests, safe migration sequencing, monitoring, and a documented rollback strategy.
How do you improve performance when a React page or NestJS endpoint becomes slow?
I first measure the bottleneck using browser profiling, application metrics, logs, and database query plans instead of guessing. Depending on the cause, I might reduce render work, paginate data, optimize indexes or queries, cache stable results, or move expensive processing off the request path.
How do you approach ownership of an ambiguous feature in a fast-moving startup?
I turn ambiguity into a written proposal with user goals, assumptions, edge cases, technical design, risks, and measurable success criteria. I align quickly with product and design, deliver a small valuable slice, gather feedback from real users, and iterate while maintaining production quality.
