Job Description

An Introduction to Primer

Primer is the unified infrastructure for global payments. We give finance and payments teams the visibility and control to reduce complexity, improve performance, and capture more revenue - all from a single platform.

Backed by Sofina, Peak XV Partners, ICONIQ, Tencent, Accel, and Balderton, we're building the payments layer the world's best companies rely on.

Which team will you be joining?

The merchant experience is only as good as the platform behind it.

In the Account Experience team we build and own the full platform that merchants use to interact with Primer, from initial setup through to day-to-day operations, and increasingly through Primer AI Companion as a first-class interface. The team covers Primer Companion, Merchant Account Setup, Monitors, Workflows, Auditing, and the cross-cutting platform concerns that keep the merchant experience cohesive and consistent.

๐Ÿ” What will you be doing?

  • Own frontend projects end-to-end — from scoping through to production — across Account Experience's payment surfaces, checkout components, and merchant-facing tooling.

  • Lead architectural decisions on the frontend systems you work on, contributing to design sessions and producing RFCs and ADRs with minimal reliance on more senior engineers.

  • Build UI that is composable, performant, and adaptable.

  • Monitor the impact of your work in production, use metrics and dashboards to catch issues proactively, and take full ownership when things need to be fixed.

  • Hold a high quality bar for your own code and raise concerns when you see things in the codebase that don't meet it.

  • Contribute to incident response when it matters — taking the lead, driving to resolution, and keeping stakeholders informed throughout.

  • Share knowledge actively and help raise the quality and confidence of the engineers around you.

๐Ÿ‘€ What we'd love to see

  • Solid frontend engineering experience, with a track record of independently delivering production-grade work across the full lifecycle.

  • Extensive experience with Typescript and ideally web components.

  • Comfortable taking on a project, scoping it, planning the architecture, and seeing it through without needing to be directed at each stage.

  • Strong understanding of how to build accessible, performant, maintainable UI at scale — ideally in a context where quality directly affects end users or downstream integrations.

  • Able to contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions and articulate trade-offs clearly.

  • Writes clean, well-tested code that peers would consider high quality — and holds yourself to that standard consistently.

  • Understands the user and business context behind the work, not just the technical brief.

  • Communicates clearly and directly, especially in async-first environments.

โœ… A typical interview process

  • An initial intro call with a Talent Partner

  • An interview with the Hiring Manager

  • Challenge Stage - Contextualised to the role

  • A final, values-alignment interview

What's the culture like at Primer?

We're building a culture where people can do their best work and be proud of the impact they have. You'll be working with people who are mission-driven, smart, and reflective, and who are genuinely invested in building exceptional products and delivering success for our merchants.

We work remotely, and have done since day one. We believe that building a successful, profitable company goes beyond proximity. We invest in our relationships through great remote working practices and thoughtfully designed face-to-face time, including workations, our annual company retreat, and access to co-working spaces across most major cities.

The work is challenging. Scaleups are a challenge, and building category-defining products is a challenge. But there's a meaningful difference between a challenge and a struggle. At Primer, the right challenge comes with the right support: strong onboarding, a collaborative environment, and a team that is genuinely invested in your success. It's never something you face alone.

Primer is committed to the equal treatment of all current and prospective employees and adopts a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, regardless of age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, or any other background or belief.

๐ŸŽฏ Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Senior frontend engineer who can independently own production projects from scoping and architecture through delivery, monitoring, and maintenance.

Required skills include extensive TypeScript experience, ideally with web components, plus strong expertise in accessible, performant, maintainable UI, testing, architecture, observability, and clear async communication.

The candidate should be familiar with leading frontend projects, writing RFCs and ADRs, making architectural trade-offs, building merchant-facing tools and payment interfaces, responding to incidents, and mentoring other engineers.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a composable TypeScript frontend architecture for merchant account setup and payment-related tooling?

I would separate domain logic, data access, state management, and presentation components, using well-defined TypeScript interfaces at each boundary. Shared primitives and web components could provide consistency while allowing individual payment surfaces to evolve independently.

What are the main considerations when building reusable web components for Primer’s merchant-facing products?

I would focus on clear public APIs, encapsulated styles, accessibility, predictable lifecycle behavior, and framework interoperability. Components should remain composable, avoid leaking implementation details, and provide strong documentation and tests.

How would you improve the performance of a complex merchant dashboard?

I would measure first using browser performance tools and production metrics, then address the largest bottlenecks, such as unnecessary renders, large bundles, expensive computations, or inefficient network requests. Techniques might include code splitting, virtualization, memoization, caching, and reducing critical-path work.

How do you ensure frontend interfaces are accessible?

I use semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, visible focus states, appropriate labels, correct ARIA only when needed, and sufficient color contrast. I also test with automated tools and manual screen-reader and keyboard checks throughout development.

How would you structure frontend state for a multi-step account setup flow?

I would distinguish server state from local UI state and keep the source of truth as close as possible to the owning feature. The flow should support validation, persistence between steps, recovery from failed requests, safe retries, and clear loading and error states.

What testing strategy would you use for payment surfaces and merchant workflows?

I would combine unit tests for business logic, component tests for interaction and accessibility, and end-to-end tests for critical flows such as setup, checkout configuration, and failure recovery. Tests should emphasize user-visible behavior and cover edge cases involving asynchronous and partially completed operations.

What should be included in a frontend RFC or ADR for a significant architectural decision?

It should explain the context, goals, constraints, alternatives considered, decision, trade-offs, and consequences. I would also document migration steps, operational considerations, and how the decision can be revisited if assumptions change.

How would you monitor a frontend feature after deploying it to production?

I would track technical signals such as JavaScript errors, Core Web Vitals, API failures, and latency, alongside product metrics such as completion and conversion rates. Dashboards, alert thresholds, structured logging, and release comparison would help detect regressions quickly.

How would you approach diagnosing a production incident affecting a merchant-facing workflow?

I would first assess impact, establish a clear incident owner, and use logs, monitoring, recent changes, and reproduction attempts to narrow the cause. I would communicate status and mitigations regularly, prioritize restoring service safely, and follow up with a root-cause analysis and preventive actions.

How would you design frontend error handling for unreliable payment or account APIs?

I would classify errors into recoverable, validation, authorization, and unexpected failures, then provide specific user guidance for each category. Requests should use safe retry behavior where appropriate, preserve user input, expose actionable telemetry, and avoid leaking sensitive payment information.
