Job Description
The team
Founded in 2011, Kraken is one of the world’s longest-standing crypto platforms, trusted by over 10 million individuals and institutions globally. We offer spot trading, margin, futures, staking, and OTC services for both individual investors and institutional clients.
The Consumer Mobile team builds the Kraken app, the interface millions of people use to interact with their money. We work primarily in React Native to make complex financial experiences intuitive, fast, and trustworthy. Our product-minded engineers work closely with Product and Design to understand client problems, challenge assumptions, shape solutions, and measure whether what we ship improves the experience.
We are expanding into Asia and building a new app specifically for Asian users. This requires genuine experience with the region’s distinct user expectations, design language, and technical constraints compared with Western markets.
The opportunity
-
Build and own high-quality React Native features end to end, from ambiguous client problems and solution design through implementation, launch, measurement, and iteration
-
Partner closely with Product and Design to shape thoughtful, responsive, and trustworthy financial experiences, including product discovery, trading, and simplified client journeys
-
Work with APIs and dynamic or real-time data, making strong decisions on state management, rendering, performance, architecture, and reliability
-
Raise the product-engineering bar through technical discussions, code reviews, collaboration, strong product ownership, and a willingness to move between product and technical challenges
-
Help build Kraken’s new app for Asian markets. Act as the team’s subject-matter guide on regional UX and design expectations, practical approaches to firewall and connectivity restrictions, and appropriate vendors and tooling such as telemetry solutions
What you bring
-
Strong React Native experience, including shipping meaningful production applications and making sound architectural and implementation decisions in a modern mobile codebase
-
A product-building mindset and strong product judgment. You start with the client problem, challenge or simplify requirements when needed, and turn loosely defined problems into measurable product outcomes
-
End-to-end feature ownership, with the ability to use metrics, experimentation, client behavior, and feedback to assess and improve what you ship
-
Experience building responsive, data-rich applications using APIs and dynamic or real-time data, alongside close collaboration with Product and Design in written and verbal English
-
Versatility and thoughtful AI use. You are comfortable wearing multiple hats and use tools such as Cursor, Copilot, or Claude to work faster while retaining responsibility for engineering judgment and quality
-
Proven experience building and shipping consumer mobile apps for Asian markets. You understand the region’s UX and design conventions, its technical limitations, and how to navigate launch challenges including firewall and connectivity restrictions. You can clearly explain how you have solved these problems before
Nice to haves
-
Experience in fintech, trading, crypto, payments, or another financial technology environment, with an understanding of trading, investing, or financial products
-
Experience with real-time or streaming data, and improving mobile application performance, responsiveness, and reliability across a range of devices
-
Experience across both mobile and web, or in a startup or small-to-medium-sized technology company where engineers work closely with Product and Design
-
Native mobile experience in Swift or Kotlin, including sound judgment about when to work below the React Native layer
-
Chinese language proficiency, such as Mandarin, or another Asian language
Unless a specific application deadline is stated in the job posting, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior Software Engineer with strong React Native experience and a proven record of shipping consumer mobile applications for Asian markets.
The candidate should be skilled in mobile architecture, APIs, dynamic or real-time data, state management, performance, reliability, product discovery, experimentation, and effective collaboration with Product and Design.
They should be familiar with owning features end to end, solving ambiguous client problems, adapting UX to regional expectations and connectivity constraints, using AI tools responsibly, and ideally working in fintech, trading, payments, or crypto.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you architect a scalable React Native application for a data-rich trading experience?
I would separate presentation, domain, and data-access layers, using a predictable state-management strategy and modular feature boundaries. I would also design clear API contracts, isolate real-time updates from UI concerns, and make navigation, caching, error handling, and observability consistent across the application.
How would you manage real-time market data in React Native while keeping the interface responsive?
I would use a WebSocket or streaming client with reconnection, heartbeat, backoff, and subscription management. Updates should be normalized and selectively propagated to affected components, while throttling or batching high-frequency updates to avoid excessive renders and battery consumption.
What techniques would you use to improve React Native performance on a wide range of devices?
I would profile with React DevTools and native performance tools, then optimize unnecessary renders, expensive computations, list virtualization, image handling, and JavaScript-to-native communication. I would also measure startup time, screen transition latency, memory usage, and frame rate on lower-end devices rather than relying only on high-end hardware.
How would you design reliable API integration for financial actions such as placing an order?
I would validate inputs on the client, use explicit loading and error states, apply request timeouts and safe retries, and make order submission idempotent where possible. The UI should clearly distinguish pending, accepted, rejected, and unknown outcomes so users are not encouraged to duplicate a transaction.
How would you handle offline conditions, unstable networks, and regional connectivity restrictions in an Asian market?
I would detect connectivity changes, provide graceful degraded states, cache safe read-only data, and avoid silently retrying sensitive financial operations. I would validate infrastructure and vendor compatibility in each target region, use supported endpoints and telemetry, and test with realistic latency, packet loss, DNS, and firewall restrictions.
When would you move functionality from React Native into Swift or Kotlin?
I would consider native code when platform APIs, performance-sensitive processing, background execution, security, or hardware integration cannot be implemented reliably through React Native. The native module should expose a small, well-documented interface and include platform-specific tests and monitoring.
How would you structure state management for server data, local UI state, and live trading data?
I would keep server state in a cache-aware data layer with request deduplication and invalidation, while keeping transient UI state local where possible. Streaming data would be normalized in a dedicated store or service, with selectors that minimize component updates and clear rules for reconciling snapshots with incremental events.
How would you measure whether a newly shipped mobile feature improves the client experience?
I would define success metrics before implementation, such as activation, completion rate, latency, error rate, retention, and support contacts. I would combine analytics, controlled experiments, crash and performance telemetry, and qualitative feedback, while ensuring financial and privacy-sensitive events are tracked safely.
How would you make a React Native financial application secure?
I would minimize sensitive data storage, use platform secure storage for credentials or tokens, enforce TLS and certificate policies where appropriate, and protect sensitive screens from accidental exposure. I would also apply least-privilege permissions, validate data at trust boundaries, avoid logging secrets, and keep dependencies and native modules regularly reviewed.
How do you use AI coding tools such as Cursor, Copilot, or Claude without reducing engineering quality?
I use AI to accelerate exploration, boilerplate, tests, and documentation, but I retain responsibility for architecture, security, correctness, and maintainability. Generated code is reviewed, tested, checked against project conventions and dependency behavior, and never trusted with sensitive logic without careful validation.
