The Role
We’re looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to join Tailor full-time as one of our early technical hires.

This is a hybrid role that blends core product development with customer-facing implementations — building real applications on Tailor’s platform while contributing reusable patterns and components back into the product.

You’ll collaborate directly with Forward Deployed PMs and customers to translate messy, real-world workflows into elegant, maintainable systems. Over time, your work will define how Tailor scales — not just in code, but in culture.

What You’ll Do
Scope ambiguous customer asks, prototype quickly, and iterate into stable customer deployments using Tailor’s platform.
Engage with customers with our Forward Deployed Product Manager to understand the customer needs, and iterate into stable customer deployments using Tailor’s platform.
Productize repeatable solutions, turning bespoke implementations into scalable modules for accounting, e-commerce, logistics, and other workflows.
Build and ship production-grade features across our stack — from front-end UIs to backend APIs, integrations, and data models.
Work with the founding team to shape engineering standards, developer experience, and platform architecture as we grow.
Who You Are
4+ years of experience building and shipping full-stack web applications in production environments. Proficiency with TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL and React is a plus.
Strong foundation in data modeling, API design, and ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability in production systems.
Comfortable integrating with third-party APIs and external platforms across accounting, commerce, or logistics domains.
Pragmatic engineer with a bias toward outcomes — you value shipping solutions that solve real problems over perfect engineering.
Comfortable with ambiguity — able to decompose fuzzy asks, prioritize independently, and ship without a complete spec.
Enjoy working with customers and turning complex operational pain points into smart, maintainable software.
Compensation, Location & Benefits
Compensation: $120,000 – $160,000 USD / year
Remote-first (anywhere with at least 6 hr overlap with US west coast)
Occasional customer meetings (remote only, no travel required)

I would separate core entities such as products, customers, orders, inventory, fulfillment, and payments, while allowing channel-specific data through extensible fields or related models. The design should preserve a canonical internal state and map external channel states through explicit integration logic.

How would you design a GraphQL API for complex operational workflows?

I would define domain-oriented types, mutations, and input objects with clear validation and authorization boundaries. I would also address pagination, query complexity, batching, and resolver performance to prevent inefficient database access.

How would you prevent the N+1 query problem in a Node.js GraphQL service?

I would use request-scoped DataLoader instances to batch and cache related entity lookups. I would also inspect generated queries and database indexes to ensure batching does not hide broader data-access problems.

How would you integrate Tailor with an external accounting or commerce API?

I would isolate the integration behind an adapter, normalize external data into internal domain models, and support retries, rate limits, and structured error handling. Webhooks should be verified, idempotent, and reconciled with periodic synchronization jobs.

How would you make synchronization jobs idempotent?

I would use stable external identifiers and persist processed event or operation keys so repeated requests produce the same result. Database constraints and upsert operations provide an additional safeguard against duplicates.

How would you design a reliable inventory update system across multiple sales channels?

I would maintain a source-of-truth inventory ledger and derive available quantities from reservations, adjustments, and fulfillment events. Updates to external channels should be asynchronous, retryable, and reconciled regularly to handle missed events or conflicts.

How would you approach building a React interface for configurable business workflows?

I would represent workflow configuration as typed schemas and render reusable components from those schemas rather than hard-coding each customer flow. Client-side validation and server-side validation should share the same business rules where practical.

How would you investigate and improve performance in a full-stack TypeScript application?

I would measure first using database query metrics, API latency, frontend performance tools, and tracing. Typical improvements include better indexes, reducing payload size, caching stable data, batching requests, and moving long-running work to asynchronous jobs.

How would you safely evolve data models and APIs used by customer deployments?

I would use backward-compatible migrations, additive schema changes, versioned contracts where necessary, and staged rollouts. Data backfills should be observable, resumable, and protected by validation before old fields or behavior are removed.

How would you turn a bespoke customer implementation into a reusable platform feature?

I would identify the underlying invariant workflow rather than copying customer-specific assumptions, then extract configurable domain primitives and interfaces. I would validate the abstraction against multiple use cases before making it part of the shared product.
