Job Description

About us

We automate our customers' operations. Wakeflow is a tech consultancy that helps its customers automate their day-to-day operations so that they can focus on innovating and providing the best possible service rather than handling large volumes of repetitive tasks.

We are official implementation partners of Messagebird and work with them to design innovative real-time communications solutions using their SMS, Voice and Whatsapp communication channels (and many more).

To do this, we use:

  • Our in-house automation tool - which allows stringing together a series of building blocks into flow charts that can be executed regularly or in response to particular events
  • OpenAI's realtime voice API for phone based Chatbots that can speak to customers in real time
  • State of the art cloud-based custom software that we host on the Google Cloud Platform

How we work

We work incredibly closely with our customers, because this is the best way to guarantee success. Custom software is path-dependant. Customers almost never know exactly what they need before we start. Instead, we develop a deep understanding of their business problem and then shape the best solution along-side them. This means you will get a lot of exposure to our customers and will be able to iterate with them yourself.

What you'll bring

  • Two years' experience working with:
    • Node.js
    • React
  • Hunger to learn
  • You need to be based in a timezone that is within 3h of London's
  • Drive to take on as much responsibility as you can handle
  • Can do attitude
  • Desire to have an impact - on Wakeflow as well as our customers' organisations

What you'll do on a daily basis

  • Interact directly with our customers to define, prioritise and deliver the desired technology roadmap
  • Work on one of our codebases to implement the roadmap on your assigned projects
  • Help the rest of the team with any blockers they face on their projects
  • Use your Javascript skills to automate the operations of wakeflow as well as our customers
  • Deploy your own code to cloud providers we work with and take overall responsibility for it's adequate functioning

What we offer

  • 5 hours per week training on how we automate, delivered by Andreas Kater, Wakeflow's founder, covering:
    • Our in-house tool
    • OpenAI's powerful APIs
    • Automating conversations with Google Dialogflow
    • Big Data Analytics using BigQuery and Looker
    • Hosting modern tech stacks on GCP
    • Delivering Customer Success
  • The ability to work from anywhere
  • Zero face-time, 100% output driven performance management
  • The prospect of growing your own team as we scale

How to apply

The first step in our application process is to take a 5min quiz, which you can find here:

馃幆 Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Middle-level JavaScript Developer with around two years of professional experience in Node.js and React, based within three hours of London. The candidate should be proactive, eager to learn, customer-focused, comfortable taking responsibility, and able to communicate effectively with clients. They should be familiar with developing and maintaining web applications, automating business processes, collaborating on project roadmaps, unblocking teammates, and deploying and supporting cloud-based code.

馃挰 Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a Node.js service that receives MessageBird webhooks for SMS, WhatsApp, or voice events?

I would validate the webhook signature, parse and normalize the event, process it asynchronously where appropriate, and return a fast acknowledgment. I would also add idempotency, structured logging, retries, and monitoring to handle duplicate events and temporary failures.

How would you structure a JavaScript automation flow consisting of reusable building blocks?

I would represent each block with a clear input and output contract, validate data between steps, and execute the flow through an orchestrator that supports branching, retries, timeouts, and error handling. Each execution should have traceable state and logs for debugging and customer support.

How do you manage asynchronous operations and failures in Node.js?

I use async/await with explicit error handling and avoid unhandled promise rejections. For external calls, I define timeouts, retry only safe operations, use exponential backoff, and distinguish transient errors from permanent validation or authorization failures.

How would you build a React interface for configuring an automation workflow?

I would separate workflow state, UI state, and server state, using reusable components for blocks, connections, and configuration forms. I would validate the workflow on the client for immediate feedback while keeping authoritative validation on the backend.

What techniques would you use to prevent unnecessary React re-renders in a complex application?

I would keep component state local where possible, use stable keys, memoize expensive calculations selectively, and avoid creating unnecessary object or callback references. I would confirm bottlenecks with profiling tools before applying memoization.

How would you integrate OpenAI's realtime voice API into a phone-based chatbot?

I would connect the telephony audio stream to a secure backend session, handle bidirectional audio and realtime events, and maintain conversation state separately from the transport layer. I would also implement interruption handling, session timeouts, error recovery, logging, and safeguards for sensitive data.

How would you design a reliable integration with third-party communication APIs?

I would isolate provider-specific logic behind an adapter, normalize provider responses, and centralize authentication, rate limiting, retries, and error mapping. Webhooks would be authenticated and idempotent, while outbound messages would have delivery tracking and dead-letter handling.

What should you consider when deploying a Node.js and React application on Google Cloud Platform?

I would use managed services such as Cloud Run or another suitable compute platform, configure environment-specific settings through secure secret management, and automate builds and deployments with CI/CD. Health checks, autoscaling, centralized logs, metrics, alerts, and rollback procedures are also essential.

How would you secure customer data in an automation platform?

I would apply least-privilege access, encrypt data in transit and at rest, store credentials in a secret manager, and validate and sanitize all external input. I would also define retention policies, audit access, avoid logging sensitive content, and isolate customers through appropriate authorization boundaries.

How would you troubleshoot a production automation that intermittently fails?

I would use correlation IDs and execution traces to follow the flow across services, then inspect structured logs, metrics, provider responses, and recent deployments. I would reproduce the issue with representative data, identify whether it is caused by application logic, infrastructure, or a dependency, and deploy a monitored fix with a rollback plan.
