Job Description

About Roamless

The origin story of Roamless is one that will be familiar to many: we saw something broken and we decided to fix it for good.

We all travel. We all need to stay connected. And we all hate roaming charges. Existing alternatives were clunky, expensive, and unreliable, so we built something better. We made it easy, reliable and affordable for travellers to get connected and stay connected as they roam the world.

Our truly global mobile connectivity service is up to 90% cheaper than traditional roaming. With one eSIM, you get instant, reliable data anywhere in the world. No SIM swaps, no hunting for Wi-Fi, no choosing countries or data packs. Your balance never expires, so you can use it across trips with zero hidden fees or expiration dates.

In just 3 years, we've grown 4-5x Year on Year and have been trusted by +1M users who overall rate us 4.6 on Trustpilot.

🚀 We also recently closed a $12M Series A led by Rasmal Ventures, with participation from Shorooq, Revo Capital, Finberg, and JIMCO, to fuel our mission of becoming the world's first truly global mobile operator.
Hiring globally and fully remote, we're a team of 60, and we're planning to grow to 100+ in the next ~12 months.

About the role

We have grown fast - 4-5x year on year and our engineering team has grown with it. We've built a strong technical foundation, shipped a product trusted by over a million users, and closed a $12M Series A. Now we're at the stage where great engineering alone isn't enough, we need someone who makes the team behind the engineering exceptional.

As our Frontend Tech Lead, you'll own both the technical direction and the people on that team. This is a player-coach role. Roughly 70% of your time will be spent on hands-on work: writing and shipping code, reviewing pull requests, and making architectural decisions alongside your team. The remaining 30% of is people leadership: 1:1s, performance conversations, unblocking engineers, and building the team habits that make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. We're not looking for someone transitioning out of coding entirely; we're looking for someone who leads best when they're still in the work.

The scope of what you'll work on is genuinely broad. On one side, there's our website, a high-traffic, conversion-critical surface where you'll help define not just how things are built, but how content is structured and accelerated through our CMS. On the other, there's our B2B enterprise portal, a brand new product for a brand new business line, currently in its earliest stages. This provides real room to design it the way it should be done.
You'll work closely with our PM responsible for our web experience from day one, shaping the roadmap rather than receiving it, the kind of role where your instincts about what to build next are as valued as your ability to build it, and where you'll be the one setting the technical direction for how the team gets there.

What you will do

  • Write and ship production-quality code daily using React, Next.js, and Node.js. Leverage AI tools as a core part of how you work.
  • Own the frontend architecture across our website, and B2B portal, making decisions that set the direction for the team
  • Champion AI adoption across the frontend team. Model it in your own workflow and build habits that make it stick collectively
  • Lead the team's CMS migration, owning both technical execution and the long-term content infrastructure design
  • Be the technical bridge between Product and Engineering. Partner with the PM responsible for our web experience from early scoping through to delivery
  • Review pull requests with feedback that raises the bar, and mentor engineers on both craft and broader engineering thinking
  • Own the people management of the frontend team: regular 1:1s, performance reviews, development plans, and honest conversations about growth and performance
  • Break down silos, build rituals and practices that encourage knowledge sharing and collective ownership within the team
  • Partner with the CTO on team structure, hiring priorities, and capacity planning as Roamless scales

What you will bring

Must-haves:
  • 8+ years of frontend development experience with deep expertise in React and Next.js
  • Strong Node.js skills: comfortable operating across the full frontend/backend boundary
  • A genuine belief in AI-assisted engineering. You already use AI tools in your own workflow and have a view on how to roll them out in a team
  • Proven experience leading or tech-leading a frontend team. You've owned technical direction and had real accountability for the output
  • Experience managing or mentoring engineers directly, with the maturity to have honest performance conversations
  • Startup mindset: you make good decisions with incomplete information, move fast, and own outcomes end-to-end
  • Strong cross-functional communicator: comfortable shaping requirements with Product and explaining tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders

Nice-to-haves:
  • Background in migrating or rebuilding web properties at scale
  • Experience managing fully remote, distributed engineering teams
  • Familiarity with scaling teams through a Series A/B growth phase
  • Background working in a product-led, B2C tech company

What we offer

  • 📈 Stock options. All employees are eligible for stock options, subject to tenure and performance.
  • 💻 Hardware you need to be most productive
  • 💻 Home office budget. $500 on equipment for home office setup (eg. a keyboard, a screen, etc). This is a one-off budget that doesn’t renew every year, but doesn’t expire.
  • 🎓 Learning and development budget. Up to $1000 annually to be spent on books, online courses, conferences, etc.
  • 🌎 Fully remote. The trust and flexibility that come with a fully-remote setup. Fully remote. We're ideally looking for someone based in Turkey, or working in a Europe-friendly time zone (CET ±2 hours)
  • 🌐 $200 non-expiry yearly Flex credit for data, hotspot, and calls.
  • 📱Annual phone number subscription for $1/year. You get an annual phone number subscription for $1/year. A real phone number (UK, Canada, or Australia) inside the Roamless app.
  • 🤗 Supportive, diverse, inclusive team

🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is best suited for a Senior/Lead Frontend Engineer or Frontend Tech Lead with 8+ years of experience building and scaling products using React, Next.js, and Node.js. The candidate should be comfortable defining frontend architecture, leading technical decisions, mentoring engineers, managing team performance, driving AI-assisted development practices, and collaborating closely with product stakeholders in a fast-growing startup environment. They should have strong ownership, experience with high-traffic web applications, CMS migrations, remote team leadership, and the ability to balance hands-on coding with people management responsibilities.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

  1. How would you architect a frontend platform that supports both a high-traffic consumer website and a growing B2B product?
I would establish shared architectural principles, reusable components, and clear domain boundaries while allowing each product to evolve independently based on its specific business needs and performance requirements.

  2. How do you balance hands-on engineering work with leading a frontend team?
I stay actively involved in architecture, implementation, and code reviews while creating processes, mentoring engineers, and ensuring the team can operate effectively without becoming dependent on me.

  3. How would you lead a CMS migration for a large-scale web platform?
I would start by identifying content models, migration risks, SEO implications, and rollout strategies, then execute incrementally while maintaining content integrity and minimizing business disruption.

  4. How do you evaluate and introduce AI-assisted development practices within an engineering team?
I focus on practical use cases that improve productivity, establish review standards for AI-generated code, share successful workflows, and measure outcomes rather than adopting AI tools for their own sake.

  5. How would you improve frontend performance for a conversion-critical website?
I would optimize Core Web Vitals, reduce JavaScript payloads, improve rendering strategies, optimize assets, monitor user behavior, and prioritize improvements based on business impact.

  6. What qualities make a strong technical leader in a fast-growing startup?
Strong ownership, decision-making under uncertainty, clear communication, technical excellence, mentoring ability, and a focus on business outcomes are essential for scaling both products and teams.

  7. How do you handle disagreements between Product and Engineering priorities?
I focus on understanding the underlying goals, making tradeoffs transparent, using data when available, and working toward solutions that maximize long-term business value.

  8. How would you mentor frontend engineers at different experience levels?
I tailor feedback to each engineer, encourage ownership, provide technical guidance through code reviews and discussions, and help them develop both technical and product-thinking skills.

  9. How do you make architectural decisions in rapidly evolving products?
I optimize for simplicity and flexibility, avoid premature complexity, document tradeoffs clearly, and continuously reassess decisions as product requirements evolve.

  10. What distinguishes a Frontend Tech Lead from a Senior Frontend Engineer?
A Tech Lead remains technically strong while also taking responsibility for team effectiveness, technical direction, engineering standards, cross-functional alignment, and helping other engineers perform at their best.

📋 Job Summary
