Job Description

Fueled is a leading digital strategy, design, and engineering agency. United with 10up – now the brand of our WordPress practice – we are a 300+ person team that has designed and built hundreds of digital products and experiences for brands like Google, Apple, The New York Times, ESPN, Victoria’s Secret, MGM Resorts, Albertsons, and CLEAR.

As a Contract Senior Front-End Engineer, your mission is to architect the user-facing foundation of our digital products, transforming complex design visions into fast, accessible, and elegant experiences. You will bridge creative vision and technical execution across WordPress block themes and Next.js/React applications, demonstrating expertise in both custom CSS craftsmanship and Tailwind-based implementations depending on project requirements. Your versatility between technical environments, strategic integration of AI tools in your workflow, and commitment to performance and accessibility will directly shape how millions of users interact with our clients' brands.

Intentionally remote and globally distributed across six continents, our team thrives in a culture that values flexibility, creativity, and cutting-edge technology. Together, we’re shaping the future of digital experiences.

What you will do:

  • Architect and build large-scale, modular front-end products that set new standards for performance, accessibility, and maintainability while bringing ambitious art direction to life.
  • Elevate the team's front-end craft through insightful code reviews and by establishing patterns for highly componentized systems that others can follow.
  • Transform complex design visions into elegant, functional experiences that balance aesthetic refinement with technical excellence across all browsers and devices.
  • Serve as a bridge between creative vision and technical reality, confidently presenting solutions to clients and team members that move projects forward.
  • Your code will directly impact millions of users through finely crafted websites and tools that make the web more beautiful, functional, and accessible.

What you will achieve:

  • Within your first month, you'll be fully integrated into our workflow—submitting quality pull requests, receiving constructive code reviews, and demonstrating efficiency with Fueled's engineering best practices and systems.
  • By the 60-day mark, you'll demonstrate mastery of Fueled engineering standards, proactively handling QA feedback, and taking ownership of ticket communication while leading a small project or feature implementation.
  • By the 3-month mark, your component architecture and code review contributions will have positively influenced the quality and consistency of the team's front-end output.
  • You will have identified and presented a technical pattern or process that enhances our approach to building maintainable front-end systems, potentially improving workflows across multiple projects.
  • Through client-facing engagements, your technical insights will help shape creative and business outcomes, leaving behind work that exemplifies front-end excellence at Fueled beyond your contract term.

About you:

  • You are driven by a craftsperson's attention to detail in cross-browser/device front-end engineering, confidently moving between WordPress block editor/theme development and Next.js/React projects.
  • Your portfolio or code samples demonstrate problem-solving skills through elegant, maintainable solutions that showcase your technical versatility across different frameworks and environments.
  • You communicate with clarity and confidence, comfortably discussing technical concepts with clients and collaborating effectively with distributed team members.
  • You think in systems and components, excelling at building interfaces that range from custom CSS implementations to efficient Tailwind-based layouts—always prioritizing UX, performance, accessibility, and business objectives.
  • You embrace modern engineering workflows, strategically leveraging AI tools to enhance efficiency and quality while thriving in a remote environment where you take ownership of your work from wherever you choose.

🎯 Who is this job for?

You're a seasoned front-end developer with deep expertise in building scalable, performant, and accessible web applications. You excel in React/Next.js ecosystems, leveraging modern tools like Framer Motion, Zustand, and TypeScript to craft clean, maintainable interfaces. Your workflow is enhanced by AI tools and robust CI/CD pipelines, with a keen eye on cross-browser support and pixel-perfect design. You also bring strong experience in WordPress block themes, Tailwind CSS theming, and effective collaboration through thoughtful code reviews and best practices.

πŸ’¬ Potential Interview Questions

  1. How do you approach building a performant and accessible front-end architecture for large-scale applications?
I prioritize modular design, lazy loading, semantic HTML, and accessible components, along with performance audits using tools like Lighthouse.

  2. What is your experience with WordPress block theme development?
I have built custom block themes using theme.json, registered custom blocks, and optimized the editor experience for content teams.

  3. How do you manage global styles and utilities when working with Tailwind CSS?
I configure Tailwind's theme for consistent design tokens, use utility classes for rapid styling, and apply @apply and custom plugins when needed.

  4. Describe a challenge you faced when integrating a complex design into a React/Next.js app.
I once implemented a pixel-perfect, animated layout with overlapping scroll effects using Framer Motion and Intersection Observer, while maintaining SSR compatibility in Next.js.

  5. What strategies do you use to keep your React components maintainable and scalable?
I use atomic design principles, isolate logic with custom hooks, and follow strict TypeScript interfaces for props and state.

  6. How do you ensure cross-browser compatibility in your front-end work?
I rely on CSS feature queries, progressive enhancement, and thorough testing with tools like BrowserStack.

  7. How have you incorporated AI tools into your front-end workflow?
I use GitHub Copilot for boilerplate code, AI-based linters for code quality, and tools like Figma AI plugins for faster asset extraction.

  8. Explain how you conduct code reviews and promote front-end best practices.
I focus on clarity, reusability, performance, and adherence to our code standards, leaving constructive comments and suggestions for refactoring.

  9. How do you handle state management in complex React apps?
I assess needs per project—using Context API for simple cases and Zustand or Redux Toolkit for more complex state logic.

  10. Can you describe your process for deploying and optimizing a Next.js site for production?
I enable image optimization, static generation or SSR as needed, bundle analysis, prefetching, and CDN deployment via Vercel or custom pipelines.
